The Missing Piece

This toe space grille HVAC vent cover. 

This is the ONLY thing standing between me and a completely, completely, completed, finished, fully-remodeled kitchen. 

The touch-up painting is done. The floor varnish has dried. The platter rack has been hung and filled with, well, you know....platters. Dishes are put away. Wall decor has been framed and ready to hang. Everything is coming together. Except for that last puzzle piece, the toe space grill HVAC vent cover. 

The contractor came on Monday to complete the grille covers for the vents, but didn’t have the right size/type to install on one vent. He texted me from Lowe’s—they had brown, but not white. Drat! So I ordered it from the Evil Empire of Amazon. It is on a truck, due to arrive here today, and I’m very close to getting in my car and driving around neighborhoods to find the UPS truck and harass the driver until he gives me my vent cover. But I won’t. I’ll wait, patiently, as I have for the past five months.

I said goodbye to the cabinet guy late last week. Said goodbye to the painters yesterday. I think I will actually miss these guys. They’ve been around so much my dog no longer barks when they’re at the door, and she goes straight to them for pets. After they’ve all gone, the house will be very, very quiet. 

Guess we’ll have to start another remodeling project! Ha!

  When we first walked through this house almost two years ago, we were sure that it was The One. And we were also sure that THIS would be the first thing to go: OK, so maybe you like brown. Maybe you think brown is a neutral, and hey, does anybody really notice what’s under foot that much? The dangers of home improvement

February 27, 2020 Day 17 Today the electrician fell through the ceiling. I was sitting in my dining room, trying to write despite the noise of two electricians and two HVAC guys doing their things (our heating ducts need to be rerouted for the new placement of cabinetry). The master electrician, a lovely man by the name of James, had been going up and down our stairs to the attic, connecting wiring to re-wire the fan and future ceiling light fixtures. I heard a really loud thud, then the sound of debris hitting the kitchen floor. Then silence. I jumped up and saw a sight that would have been comical, had it not meant certain injury for the poor man; two legs were dangling down, covered with a layer of white insulation material. Before and after

The thing is done. Exactly five months to the day after it was begun, the remodel of our kitchen is complete. Our contractor came over on a Thursday to place the vent cover. Barely 15 minutes later he got up, dusted off his hands, and said, “well, that’s it.” “Well, that’s kind of anticlimactic, isn’t it? I was expecting a bit more fanfare,” I said. He laughed. “Well, to be honest, I was expecting that the vent cover wouldn’t fit.” He almost seemed disappointed that it did fit. After all, we’d been in each other’s lives for five months, and it was drawing to a close. “I was thinking I should open a bottle of champagne, but it seems a bit early for that.” I could see his eyes crinkling up in a smile over his mask. “Well, I guess that depends on how you want the rest of your day to go.” He went out to his truck and brought back a small package, a handmade salad server set in a beautiful dark wood. “I remembered that you liked Ken’s work,” he said.
